3rd supect arrested in drive-by shooting, police say

ALBEMARLE - A third suspect wanted in connection to a drive-by shooting on February 6 turned himself in to detectives on Tuesday, Albemarle Police said.

James Byrd was charged with Discharging Weapon into Occupied Dwelling and Felony Conspiracy. He was given a $7,5000 secured bond.

Two people were inside a home on Long Street just before 4 a.m. when someone shot out the front window of the house, Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton said.

Police said one of the victims inside the home had received a call from Byrd around 3:12 a.m. The victim told police Byrd asked if he could spend the night and he said Byrd could not.

A short time later, the victim heard a vehicle drive by his house, followed by knocking on his door, Chief Halliburton said.

According to police, he called Byrd and told him he had to leave.

About 20 minutes later, the vehicle was heard driving past the house again just before the shooting, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – President Barack Obama is just months away from coming to Charlotte to accept a bid for a second run at President of the United States.

But on Tuesday, the president sat down with WBTV anchor Paul Cameron in an exclusive interview from the White House.

"Well, you know, I think that the first thing to understand is that the financial system in the United States is critical for our overall economic health," President Barack Obama told WBTV's Paul Cameron.

ALBEMARLE - The 2nd annual "Run For Their Lives" 5K race is Sunday, February 19 at 3 p.m in downtown Albemarle.

The race is in memory of fall Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department officer Jeff Shelton, who was killed in the line of duty with his partner Officer Sean Clark on March 31, 2007.

Camden Lambert launched the race last year as her Senior Service Project for Gray Stone Day School. This year the race will be hosted by her sister, Karlen Lambert.

Karlen's goal for the race is to pay tribute to and raise awareness of fallen police officers and their families.

Police, child services visit man who shot daughter's laptop

ALBEMARLE, NC (WIS) - The North Carolina man who became an instant celebrity after posting a video on YouTube shooting up his 15-year-old daughter's laptop, got a visit from the police department and child protective services last week.

Tommy Jordan posted the eight-minute video last Wednesday after finding posts that his daughter put on Facebook about her parents.

The ticked off father's video quickly went viral and already has nearly 23 million views on YouTube.

"Apparently both the local police and the department of social services are OK with it," he wrote on his Facebook timeline. "Yes they came. Of course they came. They received enough 'Oh my God he's going to kill his daughter' comments that they had to. I knew that the moment it went viral.. it was too late and it was inevitable."

Lose weight by using a fork?

Lose weight by using a fork?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The idea comes straight from France where the waistlines have long been sought-after by Americans.

The Fork It weight loss plan uses the concept of light eating late in the day to melt pounds, or so it says.

The plan suggests eating like a king at breakfast using any utensils you'd like. Lunchtime should be a lighter meal or "eat like a Prince". Dinnertime is where the only real restrictions come in, eat like a pauper and only using a fork.

The idea bans fingers, spoons and knives after 6pm and meals should only be foods naturally eaten with a fork. Fish, whole grains and pastas are suggested under the Fork It plan.

We took the concept to Charlotte nutrition counselor Nettie Reeves. She says it might work, but only if used as a tool to teach, and not as a diet.
