BBB warns of spring home improvement scams

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - More than one and a half million consumers search the local BBB’s online directory each year to find businesses for specific projects and to check out businesses before they sign contracts. With warm weather, recent storms and a soft housing market, consumers are focused on home maintenance, remodeling and repair projects.

According to the BBB, eight of the top 10 types of businesses that consumers in the Southern Piedmont are researching the most are home-related:

It's in the cards; bridge tournament this weekend

SALISBURY - The annual Dogwood Bridge Tournament takes place this weekend in Salisbury. The event draws bridge players from across the state.

The tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at the Rufty Holmes Senior Center, 1120 Martin Luther King Blvd.

The entry fee for Friday and Saturday is $8 per person, Swiss Teams fee is $88 per team.

The host hotel for the tournament is the Quality Inn, 825 Klumac Road.

‘Dads Announce Official Team Hospital

The Hickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League Affiliate of the Texas Rangers, are excited to welcome Frye Regional Medical Center as the Official Hospital of the Crawdads. Frye will serve as the official team hospital from the 2012 season through the 2014 campaign.

BBB Warning: Watch for Scam offering ‘Free’ $1,000 Best Buy Gift Card

Have you received a text message offering you a free $1,000 Best Buy gift card? The BBB has a warning that the Best Buy gift card text message is another smishing scam.

The text message says: “You have been randomly selected for a Best Buy gift. Get your $1000 gift card now at LINK REMOVED.”

A smishing scam is a phishing scam that is sent to you via SMS text to your phone, instead of via email to your computer.

State AG kicks off campaign to fight prescription drug abuse

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Attorney General Roy Cooper will visit South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte
to kick off a statewide contest to fight prescription drug abuse on Wednesday.

Cooper is partnering with the National Association of Drug Diversion
Investigators, the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, and the
Governor's Institute on Substance Abuse to sponsor a statewide student video
competition to help educate young people about the dangers of prescription drug
abuse. Prescription drugs are the second most abused drug among young
people ages 12-17.

Cooper will talk to students about the contest and the
dangers of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Also speaking to the
students will be a former prescription drug addict, a man who lost two nephews
to prescription drug overdose, and an SBI agent who investigates prescription
drug crimes.
