Checkers players, staff to grow moustaches for Movember

CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte Checkers announced today that 20 players and several staff members, including team owner Michael Kahn, will grow moustaches in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Movember, the world-wide men’s health foundation.

The players were split into two teams, led by Checkers Movember team captains Chris Durno and Chris Terry, and will compete against each other to see which squad can raise the most money. Team Durno and Team Terry were chosen via a live draft at the Checkers offices Wednesday.

Picture and video updates on the teams’ progress and donation totals will be posted at www.gocheckers.com/movember throughout the month.

Jamie Boll: Here's why I walk for Autism Speaks

Jamie Boll: Here's why I walk for Autism Speaks

I don't have a child with autism.   It's luck, I guess.   My wife and I didn't do anything different as parents than our friends Bill and Kieron O'Mara, but their middle son Casey has autism.  None of our four boys do.

We were very lucky when you consider, one in 70 boys is now found to be on the autism spectrum.   The rate is one in 110 overall.  More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer – combined.

So, why do some families get the news and not others?   We don't know yet, but we're getting closer to finding out.   Research is zeroing in on genetics, on the environment.  Perhaps, it's some combination of the two.
