Local production illustrates history of Badin

Badin Elementary School is kicking off its 2013 Centennial events with a production written by North Carolina Award winning author Heather Ross Miller and directed by Natasha Wall.

The two-act play includes a photo montage created by the Badin Historic Museum, depicting the evolution of Badin.

Theater-goers can catch opening night at the Badin School Auditorium, located at 47 Henderson Street in Badin, Friday January 11, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Additional performances are Saturday January 12, at 7 p.m. and Sunday January 13, at 3 p.m.

Admission is $5 and open to the public.

Rotary club holds 'Resolution 5k' walk/run fundraiser

The Rotary Club of West Stanly is holding its 'Resolution 5k' walk/run this week.

Proceeds go to The Rotary Club, in support of its humanitarian efforts in partnership with business leaders and professionals.

The race is at Locust Park in Locust, Sunday January 6, at 2 p.m.

Registration is $20 online, or $25 on race day.

Albemarle celebrates Christmas with annual parade

Albemarle, NC - The City of Albemarle is celebrating Christmas with its annual parade.

Among the lineup is the Mayberry Car, along with the Albemarle High School 'Marching Bulldogs' and Santa.

The parade takes place in downtown Albemarle, Monday, December 10, at 5:30 p.m.

The route begins at First Citizens Bank on First Street and continues through the downtown area, ending at Charles Cannon Memorial Park.

Oakboro Christmas celebration includes wagon ride for kids

The town of Oakboro is celebrating Christmas with a parade.

Event-goers can also enjoy pre-parade activities including a tree lighting ceremony and music from the RBC adult choir. There are train & wagon rides for the kids, as well.

The festivites are at 109 North Main Street, Thursday 6:30 - 8 p.m.

The event is free.

CONCORD - Later this afternoon Charlotte Motor Speedway will kick off its busiest Thanksgiving week ever with the grand opening of Speedway Christmas, including special appearances by NASCAR Hall of Famer and five-time Coca-Cola 600 champion Darrell Waltrip and his brother, 1996 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race winner and NASCAR team owner Michael Waltrip.

The Waltrip brothers will make a special announcement regarding the speedway’s Season of Giving before helping Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Marcus Smith turn on the show’s more than 3 million lights and lead the way through opening night at the 3.5-mile holiday extravaganza.

“Hunger Has a Cure” Campaign kicks off at Food Lion

Food Lion is launching its tenth annual “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign to support Feeding America® and its local member food banks.

The campaign, which gives customers the opportunity to donate money, canned good items and purchase ready-made food boxes, runs from November 14 through December 25.

“Food Lion’s ‘Hunger Has a Cure’ campaign helps alleviate hunger in our communities,” said Sherrii Webb, community relations manager for Food Lion. “During our holiday food drive, Food Lion and our customers hope to donate one million pounds of food locally, and raise $100,000 during our at-register campaign, to serve local food banks in our communities.
