Operation "Road Watch" ends on successful note

The Highway Patrol completed its Operation "Road Watch" campaign after a two-day intensive enforcement effort on I-85 in Cleveland and surrounding counties. 

During the two-day event, which began on Tuesday, May 14, and ended on Wednesday, May 15, Troopers concentrated on commercial motor vehicle violations as well as focused their attention on motorists who were driving aggressively around big trucks, speeding, tailgating, and driving aggressively.

Established in 2007, Operation "Road Watch" was designed to improve commercial motor vehicle safety as well as the efficiency of commercial vehicle operations.

Reward offered after man found bound, dead inside Stanly Co. home

ALBEMARLE, NC (WBTV)- A reward is being offered for new information after deputies say a man's body was found bound to a chair inside a Stanly County home earlier this week.

Stanly County Sheriff Rick Burris told WBTV that CrimeStoppers is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information in the death of 27-year-old Jason Whitney Burleson.

Investigators say Burleson was found bound to a chair inside his home along the 27000 block of Groves Road, just outside of Albemarle, on Sunday afternoon.

"Evidence at the residence indicated that Burleson was the victim of a homicide committed by unknown person or persons," deputies told WBTV.

Sheriff Burris told WBTV that his department is "aggressively investigating" the case and that they are doing a number of interviews. 

"It's going to take some time, we have to cover all of our bases," Burris said on Wednesday morning. "But hopefully we'll be able to make an arrest."

Third person arrested in multi-county chase, crime spree

ALBEMARLE, NC (WBTV)- The Anson County Sheriff says a third man has been arrested after a home invasion in Charlotte turned into a carjacking and ended in a police chase through Stanly and Anson counties last week.

Deputies, along with officers with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Violent Crimes Taskforce, arrested Edward Hudson from Morven around 8:00 Tuesday morning without incident, according to Sheriff Tommy Allen.

Hudson is the third man arrested in the past week following the crime spree. Robert Lamarr Smith was arrested on Monday, according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.

A third man, 30-year-old Jarvis Terez Marsh, was arrested last week after he crashed a vehicle outside the town of Norwood.

Investigators say two men broke into a home in Charlotte and then took off to Midland, in Cabarrus County, where they reportedly were involved in a home invasion and assault.

Duo arrested for October B&E, deputies say

Two people have been arrested in Stanly County in relation to a burglary that happened in October, according to officials.

On October 04, 2012, deputies with the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ingram Road in reference to a breaking and entering and larceny.

After the initial report, Detectives said they were able to identify Belinda Raye Cox, 42, as a suspect. She was arrested on April 11.  

Additional information provided by an Albemarle Police Detective led investigators to a pawn shop where a stolen mower was located, officials said.

Michael Curtis Freeman, 30, was then identified as an additional suspect. He was arrested on April 22.

Both Cox and Freeman were charged with breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.

Freeman was also charged with an additional count of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Duo arrested after doors stolen off truck, deputies say

Two men were arrested Wednesday for stealing the doors off of someone’s vehicle, according to the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office.

On March 21, deputies took an incident report that two truck doors were stolen off a vehicle.

The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and identified two suspects, Jeremy Dion Davis, 21, and James Robert Butler, 66, both of Albemarle.

Arrest warrants were obtained for Davis for felonious break or enter a motor vehicle and felonious larceny. Warrants were obtained for Butler for felonious possession of stolen goods and felony receiving stolen goods.

Bothe were arrested and taken to the Stanly County Detention Center and placed under a $10,000 secured bond each. Both have a District Court date of May 6.

“No Need 2 Speed” Campaign cites 14,542 motorists in NC

A total of 42,290 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide during this year’s “No Need 2 Speed” campaign, which ran March 25 through 31. 

Law enforcement officers from across the state partnered with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to increase enforcement in an effort to put a stop to one of the main causes of crashes and fatalities on North Carolina’s roads – speeding.

“Law enforcement’s presence on our roads is imperative to reminding motorists to obey speed limits, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to keeping our roads safe,” said Becky Wallace, director of GHSP.

Officers also issued 3,157 safety belt and 587 child passenger safety violations and 1,111 drug charges.

Deputies: 2 arrested for obtaining property by false pretense

On March 20, Deputies with the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office assisted Stanfield Police Department with an investigation, which ended with the arrest of two men.

Cliffton Thomas Love, 24, and Thomas Michael Wilburn, 25, both of Stanfield, were arrested and charged with obtaining property by false pretense. Both were processed into the Stanly County Detention Center.

Cliffton Thomas Love was given a $55,000 secured bond, and Thomas Michael Wilburn was given a $15,000 secured bond.

Both have a court date sceduled on April 9, in District Court in Albemarle.
