The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying a man they believe to be passing counterfeit checks.
Over the past several months, the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies have encountered numerous incidents involving counterfeit checks. An extensive investigation of these incidents has been ongoing by law enforcement agencies where the victims are located and where the transactions have been occurring.
It is believed that the person or people responsible are printing counterfeit checks listing the account information of the victims along with unassociated names and other information on the checks. The suspect(s) may be using some type of false identification to pass the checks, deputies say.
The counterfeit checks have been used mainly at larger retailers in the greater Charlotte metropolitan area, South Carolina and others areas outside the region.
To date there are over 100 counterfeit check transactions documented with law enforcement agencies.
During the course of a multi-agency investigation several images of a person believed to be responsible for passing the counterfeit checks have been obtained.
Law enforcement investigators are seeking assistance in identifying the man in the images.
If anyone has information they are urged to contact the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office by calling (704)986-3714.
