Morrow Mountain State Park to conduct control burn

STANLY COUNTY (NC Department of Environment and Natrual Resources) - The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation will conduct a prescribed burn at Morrow Mountain State Park in Stanly County between Jan. 4 and Jan. 13, when conditions are suitable, according to Park Superintendent Jason Gwinn.

The burn will be conducted on 600 acres near the park’s northern boundary and adjoining Alcoa property. Some areas of the park, including portions of the Fall Mountain Trail and the bridle trail, will be closed to the public during the event.

Yadkin Riverkeeper challenges Alcoa's claim of river bed ownership

WINSTON-SALEM - The Yadkin Riverkeeper submitted a request Tuesday in a state administrative court requesting a declaratory ruling to determine the true ownership of the Yadkin River bed in Stanly County in order to protect the state's interest from Alcoa Power Generating, Inc..

Yadkin Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks said based on recent uncovered deeds, the N.C. Department of Administration is overdue in challenging Alcoa’s assertions of ownership of the Yadkin riverbed; and that citizens of North Carolina are the rightful owners of the river itself as a Public Trust Resource, according to a news release from the Riverkeeper's office.

Naujoks said these deeds suggest that the State of North Carolina may be entitled to request additional payments from the owner of the deeds.

In its investigation, attorneys for the Yadkin Riverkeeper uncovered a series of five land grants filed with the Register of Deeds of Stanly County dating back to 1899.

Green Pieces will provide an 18-gallon bin for collection.  Residents may also use the orange bins previously provided by the City of Albemarle.

Tucker Engineering scaling up to fight beetle infestation

LOCUST (Jim Lisk, Inside Stanly) - Tucker Engineering Associates in Locust is receiving a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Forestry Service to continue development of its gasification process. Initial testing for the Forestry Service of sawmill waste in February was successful and the grant is the result of that testing.

Richard Tucker, the developer of the gasification process, said Friday that the grant will be used to complete the prototype equipment. An additional unit will be added to furnace where the biomass products are converted to methane gas with carbon as a by-product.

Fall in the Yadkin River Basin started with great news as Yadkin Riverkeeper received the Governor’s Water Conservationist of the Year award at a banquet sponsored by NC Wildlife Federation in Raleigh. First presented in 1958 these prestigious awards honor those individuals, governmental bodies, associations and others who have exhibited an unwavering commitment to conservation in North Carolina.

Governor Bev Perdue was unable to attend the awards banquet but was kind enough to produce a short video to express her appreciation of the awards winners. “Tonight we are going to honor twenty award recipients for their tireless efforts to preserve North Carolina’s treasured places. Outdoor recreation, hunting and fishing are major economic engines for our state.”

$689,240 in grants awarded to 13 Charlotte-area communities

(Carolina Thread Trail) - The Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board has approved trail grant applications from 13 community projects along The Thread totaling $689,240.

Trail implementation grants are awarded by the Board to provide catalytic funding to communities to assist with trail corridor design, land acquisition and construction.

“We are pleased by the enthusiasm of our communities to implement their segments of The Thread,” said Philip Blumenthal, chair of the Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board.  “These catalytic grants will result in more trails, contributing to the betterment of our region’s health and quality of life.”
