What to do this weekend in Stanly County: May 19-20th edition

ALBEMARLE, NC (WBTV)- Stanly County is on the move…literally. It seems that every
week there is a running event for someone, from seniors to students and all
those in between.

This weekend sees the wrap-up of the Senior Games, a Relay
for Life and the Run for the Son 5K. Even those cute little rubber ducks are
into racing. Good causes and great prizes are the order of the day for all this
activity.

Thursday is the final day for the Uwharrie Senior Games and
Silver Arts. The event began on April 28 at the Stanly County Senior Center. It
is free for first-timers and $12 for returning participants. Seniors can
participate in a multitude of sports as varied as Golf, Bocce, Softball,
Swimming and Cornhole. They can also enter in the Silver Arts with heritage,
visual and literary categories available. Join over 200 seniors for this great
event.

GOP race for governor is a battle against McCrory

GOP race for governor is a battle against McCrory

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Observers watching the GOP
governor's race in our state may see it as one goliath being chased by five
much smaller David's.

To voters in Mecklenburg
County, Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is a household name; the former
Charlotte Mayor who lost to Bev Perdue four years ago, is just one of six GOP
candidates in the contest with a big advantage.

So voters may be asking, who
are these other people, and how are they getting their messages out ?

Five of the candidates don't
have big budgets, and that means Jim Harney of Cumberland County is relying on
social media, and said recently on twitter that he supports amendment one, and
told the Charlotte Post that he backs the voter I.D. law.

Greensboro's Scott Jones is
using Facebook to sound off and some of his posts are laced with profanity. He
calls himself an average Joe Mulch man running for governor.

Man accused of insurance fraud, filing false police report

STANLY COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced the arrest of 52-year-old Franklin Baxter Vaughn, of Albemarle, charged with one count each of insurance fraud and filing a false police report.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that on Feb. 20, 2012, Vaughn reported to the Stanly County Sheriff's Office that $6,848 worth of items had been taken from his home during a burglary.

A Stanly County Sheriff's Office detective later interviewed Vaughn and found several items that were reported stolen still in the home.

When confronted, Vaughn admitted to adding $4,947 worth of items to the report so that he could benefit from his insurance policy with N.C. Grange Mutual Insurance Company. The detective notified the Department of Insurance and N.C. Grange representatives, who rejected the insurance claim.
