Local man remembers pickin' with Doc Watson

Local man remembers pickin' with Doc Watson

SALISBURY - Steve Harrill is well known as a professor of music at Pfeiffer University in Stanly County, and as the former Music Minister at First Baptist Church of Salisbury.  He's also well known as an accomplished musician.

What may not be known, at least until today, is that just last October a dream came true Harrill when he had the chance to play guitar with musical legend Doc Watson, who passed away Tuesday in a Winston Salem hospital.

"He could play all forms of music, and I believe that's one of the things that separated Doc from everybody else, his playing and his singing were just so genuine," Harrill told WBTV.

Talking about Doc Watson with Steve Harrill without his guitar just wouldn't tell the whole story. Steve has long been an admirer of Watson's and the style he mastered called flat picking...

Get the rub for Q2U's Boston Butt BBQ

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Q2U owner Brian Rich visited WBTV News at Noon today, sharing his spice rub marinade recipe with anchor Kristen Miranda.

Q2U's vinegar-based BBQ sauce was recently chosen as one of three official sauces for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.  Q2U is located at 4052 Charlotte Highway in Lake Wylie, SC.

Here's the recipe:

1/4 cup salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup chili powder
1/4 cup ground black pepper
1/2 cup ground cumin
1/2 cup smoky paprika
1/8 cup cayenne pepper
3/4 cup light brown sugar
6-8# Boston Butt

Combine all ingredients by hand or use a food processor.  Generously rub spice mix on butt.  Coating will be thick.  Let sit up to an hour (you should see it start to "sweat").  You can cook overnight in a crock pot...or cook over indirect heat on either a charcoal or gas grill.  (If you're using a gas grill, light one side and place the butt on the othe

Help soldiers stay in touch with loved ones

Help soldiers stay in touch with loved ones

The Honda Dealers of the Carolinas are serving as drop-off locations for old cell phones, to be turned into free minutes for soldiers to talk to their loved ones.

Imagine being thousands of miles from home in an area far different than the hometown where you grew up, or on a base within the United States and wanting to feel closer to home. Wouldn’t you cherish just a few minutes to talk with someone close to you?  Many of our military men and women are currently in that situation. Others are confined to hospital beds as they recuperate from injuries sustained while defending our freedom.

Kelly Franson: Taking a look back at my brain tumor

Kelly Franson: Taking a look back at my brain tumor

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It was April 1, 2010 when I was told I had a brain tumor.  Yes, on April Fool's Day.

I knew the doctor wasn't joking, but I remember thinking maybe, just maybe, he had made a mistake—wrong exam room, wrong patient, wrong MRI.  But then he showed me the scan.

I'm no doctor, but I could clearly see the grape-sized tumor.  I also recognized my nose.  It was my profile, so it must also be my brain.  And my brain tumor.

Fast forward two years, and having once had a brain tumor is something that rarely crosses my mind, no pun intended.

I was lucky.  My tumor was "the best kind of brain tumor" to have.

It was found before it caused big problems.  It was in a location that made it fairly easy for a neurosurgeon to remove.
